Right under the acropolis of Thestia there is the monastery of Vlochos, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary ("koimisis tis Theotokou"), with a religious but also national and social role in the surrounding area.

Among the buildings of the monastery is found the temple of the Assumption. This is a simple one-room church of 18th century (a basilica type construction with an elaborate wooden roof and iconostasis).

The foundation of the monastery dates from the late 12th and early 13th century, and was reestablished in the mid-16th century. When in 1834 the monastery was closed by decree of king Otto, all relics had been moved to the monastery of Proussos. Nowadays, only a few relics are preserved, including a communion cup, a gospel, a feretory and the stamp of the Monastery.

In Vlochos there was also a school where the Greek children were learning to read and write. Two of the greatest figures of Greek Enlightenment, Cosmas of Aetolia and Eugene of Aetolia attended the school.
